Ace works with key government agencies in the Philippines, via national-level councils and working groups on various issues related to child protection. One of the programs he helped start initiate in 2015 – the CyberSafe program – is currently adopted by the Philippine Department of Education as part of its child online protection response.

He also works with KNH Germany as their Regional Child Protection Trainer for Asia, supporting partners on child protection policy development and child protection programming (child sexual abuse prevention and Child Online Protection) across 10 countries in Asia. Ace represents Stairway as a CSO member of the WeProtect Global Alliance. Currently heading the Stairway Child Safeguarding and Capacity Development Unit, Ace is working to maximize further and wide-scale the use of eLearning for child online protection capacity building. Throughout his 2 decades in the child protection field, he has spoken at several local, regional, and global conferences on child protection.

Panelist 2: HAZELYN JOY BITAÑA | Child Rights Coalition (CRC) Asia

Hazel is currently the Program Manager of Child Rights Coalition Asia (CRC Asia), responsible for overseeing the program implementation and a few organizational operations.

In her time with CRC Asia since 2015, she is most proud of the number of child-friendly materials she helped produce. The part of her job that she dislikes the most is talking in front of a crowd, but she keeps on accepting speaking invitations anyway and she finds it difficult not to share when there is an opportunity.

Prior to joining CRC Asia, she worked for Asia against Child Trafficking and Plan International Philippines. Her first job is being a creative writer for a live television show.

Hazel has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Communication with a Magna cum Laude distinction, and also holds a Master of Statistics degree – both from the University of the Philippines Diliman.

#Realitycheck: Educational Challenges Affecting Youth and Young People

Sabrina Ongkiko has been a public school teacher at Culiat Elementary School, Philippines since 2009. She finished her Master of Education from the University of Melbourne as an Australia Leadership Awardee and received the John and Elizabeth Robertson prize for Best Research Essay in Education. She earned her Post Graduate Diploma in Education from the National Institute of Education, Singapore as part of the Leaders and Educators in Asia Programme.

She was a Biology graduate from Ateneo de Manila University and served as a Jesuit Volunteer for a year. She is a 2014 awardee of the Many Faces of the Teacher given by the Bato Balani Foundation, was named one of the 15 Women of 2015 by the Manila Bulletin and was a YoLO (Youth Leading Others) Awardee of the National Youth Commission. In 2016, she was one of the awardees of The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service (TOWNS) Award, and in 2021 was named one of Metrobank Foundation’s Outstanding Filipinos. This 2022, she was awarded as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of the Philippines for her work in education.

Sabrina shared her story as a public school teacher at the TEDx conference at the Ateneo de Manila University where she got a standing ovation. Passionate about education, she has spoken in different venues including the UNESCO conferences in Thailand and Paris.

 She advocates for better and quality education for Filipinos – encouraging and opening doors for others to take part in building the nation through education.

From hosting TV shows and events to interviewing international acts – Joyce is a flexible presenter for different platforms. To date, she has hosted countlessly digital shows, TV programs, and live events, and worked with major local and international brands.

On-air as a radio jock for 4 years, Joyce now hosts the leading podcast in the Philippines, Adulting with Joyce Pring, which garnered popularity since its launch in 2018 – garnering the number one spot on both Spotify and iTunes, with more than 350 thousand listeners globally and almost 4 million streams across all platforms. The podcast won Best Informative Podcast at the Platinum Stallion Media Awards in 2020.

 As a keynote speaker, Joyce gives various talks to university students on productivity and mental health. Some of the universities Joyce has visited are the University of the Philippines, Lyceum of the Philippines, Far Eastern University, and De La Salle University, as well as various companies such as SEAOIL, World Vision, YouTube, Google Philippines, Canva, and GMA Network, amongst many others.

The State of Filipino Youth

 Mr. Emil Tapnio currently serves as the Youth Leadership Development Specialist at The Asia Foundation.

 Mr. Tapnio has over 15 years of technical and management experience in designing and implementing interventions in the fields of education, economic empowerment, and human rights, with a focus on youth political participation and social involvement.

To date, his program portfolio funding counts over US$50 million from the USAID, the US Department of State, Australian Aid, UNDP, and the Philippine Government. Since earning a degree in Public Administration from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, Mr. Tapnio has championed innovative leadership in the development sector.

He regularly conducts training and workshops for young leaders, and has presented on youth leadership, entrepreneurship, and technology at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and Bangkok; the World Bank, the US Department of State, the US Congressional Youth Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C; and numerous universities in the US and the Philippines.

In 2018, he completed his Professional Fellowship by the US Department of State’s Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) in Hawaii and Washington DC, USA. In 2016, he was appointed as one of the Global Ambassadors of the International Young Leaders Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

#ThePricetoPay: Being Bold in Taking the risk and Reaching for your Goals

Mirus Ponon is a 21-year-old youth advocate whose journey started from his experience growing up in an environment surrounded by poverty led him to begin volunteering at nine. As a visionary of an engaged Filipino youth community, he started Youth Advocates for the Philippines, Inc. (YAP) in 2019 to break down opportunity barriers for the youth and other disadvantaged sectors. Using development initiatives with inclusion, innovation, and empowerment at its core has scaled to the ASEAN Youth Advocates Network in 10 Southeast Asian countries, reaching 200,000 young advocates.

Currently taking up Development Studies and Economics as a scholar at De La Salle University in the hope of becoming a development professional, he has continued to seek opportunities to learn and help. Now serving various organizations such as WWF Philippines, Student Catholic Action, and the Manila Youth Development Council, he has continued to reach out, becoming a speaker for more than 500 events worldwide.

Believing the youth’s capability to make a difference, he was recognized nationally and internationally, notably as the first Filipino Global Teen Leader, Young Global Changemakers Awardee, a Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation NextGen Leader, CSR Youth Awardee, National Youth Commission & Junior Chamber International youth service awardee, and was recently hailed as 1 of the 10 Outstanding Scholars of the Philippines and the Jose Rizal Outstanding Model Student of the Philippines, and has represented the Philippines in APEC, ASEAN, and the United Nations.

Brenden is currently working as a Project Development Officer IV at the Department of Social Welfare and Development Cordillera. He started his career in public service as Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President of La Trinidad, Benguet. He also worked as Executive Assistant at the Philippine Information Agency Cordillera and then as Regional Executive Assistant of DSWD Cordillera. He also had a brief stint as a Reporter for Samoa Observer News Group in the Pacific.

 An advocate of Indigenous Peoples Rights and a Social Protection Scholar.

Ms. Nanette Macaguiwa is the Chief Education Supervisor of the Schools Governance and Operations Division of the Schools Division of Calapan City. She is an experienced advocate of child protection, being a National Trainer on the topics of Cybersafety, Child Protection, and Positive Discipline. She is also a Child Protection Specialist and a Writer of Cybersafe Modules.

She earned a Certificate of Achievement on Protecting Children in Humanitarian Setting from ColumbiaX of Columbia University, a Certificate of Achievement in International Women’s Health and Human Rights from StanfordOnline of Stanford University, and she completed a course on Child Protection: Child’s Rights in Theory and Practice from Harvard University.

 TLS Speaker on Child Protection: ATTY. ENZO TOLEDO

Atty. Enzo currently heads the Legal Team of the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) and is also the Executive Assistant of the agency’s Executive Director.

 Before CWC, he held the position of Attorney IV at the Career Executive Service Board (CESB) where he specialized in Administrative Law and before that, as a Legal Officer of the Philippine Coast Guard where he was assigned in the National Coast Watch Center, focusing on Maritime Security.

 He is also a founding partner of Toledo, Ang, Mahinay, and Aguilana Law Office, a private law firm in Bonifacio Global City.

 Prior to becoming a lawyer, he worked with various Civil Society Organizations where he was involved in the crafting of policies in health, road safety, disaster response, environmental law, and children’s rights.

 Atty. Toledo earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication and Juris Doctor Degree at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

Aside from his legal career, he is also a college professor where he teaches courses in Ethics, Business, and Communication.

As a young entrepreneur and an internationally renowned inventor, M.Y. Angel is of the conviction that it is her responsibility to empower as many individuals as possible. Inspiring them to have faith in their God-given capabilities and trusting that a small ripple will go a long way.

With this, she plans to build a social enterprise that will be a vehicle for sustained employment to serve so many fellow Filipinos for years to come.

This young inventor’s main goal is to be an inventor for the planet, creating solutions that will address the present and future challenges of our world. Fully aware of the now-becoming existential threats that face humanity and all life on earth. And in doing so, accordingly make AirDisc a household brand that leads the cooling industry toward a holistically better future, one innovation at a time.

TLS Speaker on Education: MARION JOSEPH VILLAR 

Marion is a young development worker who has experience in advocacy work, program development & management, as well as government & media relations. He currently serves as the Program Officer for the Youth Leadership for Democracy or YouthLed, a 5-year project implemented by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and The Asia Foundation.

He specifically works on the development and implementation of the activities under the Civic Education component with the goal of increasing the knowledge, skills, dispositions, and actions on civic rights, duties, and responsibilities among the Filipino youth through academic and social interventions. Marion is also a graduate of the University of the Philippines-Diliman in 2015, a Gerry Roxas Leadership Awardee (GRLA), and a semi-finalist for the Ramon V. del Rosario Siklab Awards. He is currently taking up his Master of Public Administration at the UP National College of Public Administration and Governance (UP NCPAG).

TLS Speaker on Environment: HAROLD L. BANNGAY

Harold Banggay is a marine conservationist and an environmental sustainability advocate. He is the Founder and Executive Director of Project Mariknows, a non-profit that empowers and educates citizens, maritime professionals and students in the Philippines to be leaders in marine and ocean protection. He studied Environmental Issues and Natural Resources Management in East-West Center at University of Hawai’i through the YSEALI Academic Fellowship Program of the U.S. Government.

He has worked not just all over the Philippines but also abroad through ASEAN Abundance Innovation Lab which bridges the gap between innovation, resource management, and economical factors in all ASEAN Countries and also worked through grants of U.S. Department of State, U.S, Embassy in the Philippines, Sustainable Ocean Alliance, Cultural Center or the Philippines, and many more, focusing on youth empowerment, marine conservation, and environmental sustainability projects.

He is also an awardee of the U.S Embassy in the Philippines’ 1st Alumni Excellence Award and the current President of United States Government Alumni Association – Davao. Harold is passionate about the ocean, innovation, youth empowerment, promoting positivity, breaking boundaries, and wearing bold red lipstick while he’s at it.

TLS Speaker on Environment: JEFFERSON ESTELA

Jefferson Estela is a Filipino climate activist, storyteller, and architectural designer. 

He has been part of youth, climate, and built environment-related campaigns focused on the intersection of the climate crisis, environment, and social justice and has presented stories at the National Climate Change Conference, Youth Climate Dialogue of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). In November, he recently represented Filipino Youth in last year’s COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

He is a member of the Loss and Damage Youth Coalition, the Chairperson of the Committee on Environment of the Antipolo Local Youth Development Council in Antipolo City, Rizal and the co-founder of Youth Strike 4 Climate Philippines (YS4C PH), the pioneer youth-led climate movement and campaign in the Philippines focused on humanizing climate action through activism and storytelling. Last 2020, he was named as one of the 5 young Filipinos who made waves in climate and environmental justice by Greenpeace Philippines. 

He is staunch mobility and transport supporter, conservation enthusiast, and aspiring photographer, and this youth advocate can only hope for a greener and more livable world for all.

TLS Speaker on Leadership and Civic Engagement: DR. TERESA G. FABUGAIS

A graduate of BS in Management Information System from Ateneo de Zamboanga University. She took her master’s in Public Management at Ateneo de Manila University and a certificate course in Organizational Psychology and Continuing Professional Education at Ateneo de Zamboanga University and Bridging Leadership at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM). And a candidate for Doctor in Public Administration at the National College of Public Administration in Governance, University of the Philippines, Diliman.

 She is a former Director of the Center for Leadership and Governance in Mindanao which initiates and provides various services to government and non-government institutions like Leadership training for Mindanao leaders. A former Program Manager of Zuellig Family Foundation (ZFF) for the Program on Health Leadership and Governance Program in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH) that provides training for various academic institutions in the country and the Local government Units to help improve the local health system. And became the nationwide consultant of DSWD on the strengthening of the Social Protection Reforms in the country. 

She is now doing consultancy work for various government and non-government agencies like DOH, DSWD, AFP, PNP, USAID, and ADB among others on leadership and governance in general. This is aside from her teaching stint in some of the universities she is partnering with.  Aside from being a Coach and a Trainer for both basic and advanced courses on leadership, she also customizes designs for leadership and management modules.

TLS Speaker on Leadership and Civic Engagement: FLORED JAY N. MEDINA

Mr. Flored Jay Naval Medina completed his Master’s Degree in Public Administration at Bicol University and is also one of the Outstanding Graduates in 2021. Now, currently taking up a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Administration at the same institution.

He is truly one steadfast public servant, for more than a decade he has been serving his community in Legazpi City as former SK Chairman, Councilor, & Punong Barangay. On the side of his public service, he’s still pursuing his passion for events hosted in Bicol Region for 10 years already. Now, he’s well-known and dubbed as “The Versatile Host Of Bicolandia”.

Currently, he’s part of the academe as an Instructor at the University of Santo Tomas – Legazpi Tourism Management Department and the President of Gabay Bicolandia, an Association of Regional Tour Guides in the Bicol Region. Lastly, he’s a youth empowerment advocate who loves to interact with the youth by joining several international and national programs such as the National Youth Parliament (NYP) in 2016, Regional Youth Advisory Council (RYAC) in 2017, Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) as Student Ambassador of the Philippines to Japan in 2008 & Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP) as Philippine Youth Ambassador of Goodwill in 2018 & 2021.

TLS Speaker on Leadership and Civic Engagement: JANN ROMEO S. NACAR

As an advocate of education, servant leadership for youth and community development Jann Romeo Nacar has always had passion and fuel to help and achieve positive changes to the ever-changing landscape of our Society.

He graduated from Occidental Mindoro State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and started taking his Master’s Degree in Educational Management at De La Salle University. Mr. Nacar is currently working as a teacher fellow at Teach For the Philippines, Inc. who implemented Project LEAD (Leadership and Empowerment Alliance for Development) to strengthen the sense of leadership of the students in the City of Makati.

He serves as program consultant and facilitator for both local and international funded projects. Some of these are Intergenerational Exchange Program funded by the Government of Netherlands – Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Bantay Mangrove Project funded by the Foundation for the Philippine Environment.

Mr. Nacar is also one of the advisers of youth organizations in the Province of Occidental Mindoro namely Mindoro Young Leaders Association and Ph-LEAD Oksi Chapter. These organizations are working closely to instill the value and significance of servant leadership in community development.

 TLS Speaker on Leadership and Civic Engagement: ATTY MARK LORENZ C. QUEZON

Atty. Mark Lorenz C. Quezon is a lawyer, human rights, and youth advocate. He currently works as the Secretary to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (Provincial Board) of Bataan.

He was a solo law practitioner before joining the government, focusing on consultancy, and criminal and civil cases.

He was the President of the San Beda Law-Human Rights Advocates and is a member of the National Society of Parliamentarians Inc.’s Legal Affairs Department. He obtained his Juris Doctor degree from Arellano

University and his Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of the

Philippines-Diliman. He is an alumnus of UNESCO’s Youth Leadership Workshop on

Global Citizenship Education, held in South Korea.

TLS Speaker on Leadership and Civic Engagement: KAMILLE CORPUZ

Kamille Theresa Corpuz is the Executive Director of RSPO Foundation, Inc. which is the Philanthropic and Socio-Civic Arm of Century Pacific Group. As the Head, she aligns the company’s business priorities with sustainability initiatives by developing programs that impact hunger and malnutrition, education, and the environment.

Previously awarded as the one of the 100 Most Inspiring Filipina, Kamille completed the program “Bridging Leadership Management of Change for Development Managers” at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), where she gained the attributes of a leader capable of forming partnerships and collaboration that addresses the current social issues of our country.

Concurrently, Kamille serves as the Community Director of the Society of Sustainability Practitioners, a community working towards a shared goal of elevating the practice of sustainability in the Philippines. She also volunteers for World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in the Philippines, She Loves Data, and MakeSense Philippines.

TLS Speaker on Diversity and Inclusivity: LENBI R. LABORTE

A Registered Psychometrician by profession and a community development executive by passion, Mr. Laborte is currently connected to the Central Visayas Network of NGOs (or CENVISNET) as the Executive Director. This is a coalition of non-government organizations’ networks in the region 7.

He is also the coordinator of the internationally-known Wellbeing Cluster PH and the national movement Zero Extreme Poverty 2030 for Cebu Convergence. A former student leader and youth commissioner in Cebu City representing the Federation of Student Councils and Governments for 2-terms. A national youth parliamentarian of the National Youth Commission and one of the founding members and board of trustees of the National Society of Parliamentarians. He is a humanitarian actor, serving the community as a volunteer search and rescue personnel of the CEVSAR and a community facilitator of the Facilitators’ Circle. A champion and advocate of youth governance, wellbeing, and social inclusion. A strong ally of the LGBTQI+ with their project Bahay ni Beshy Gaynitiative — gained 2nd prize in the Unilab Foundation Ideas Positive Run 8. He is celebrating his birthday in this month of Pride. TLS Speaker on Diversity and Inclusivity: AMIEL JAY V. LOPEZ

Amiel Lopez is a teacher, development worker, anthropologist-in-the-making, and environmental and social inclusivity advocate. He is the co-founder and chairperson of Developing the Youth with Environmentally Sustainable Advocacies to Build and Empower Lives (DYESABEL) Inc., commonly known as “Project Dyesabel” – a non-profit and Bajau-and-youth-led organization that co-creates inclusive environmental initiatives for the people and the planet. He also works as the Program Officer in Basic Education of Save the Children Philippines based in General Santos City.

He finished BS Education major in Biological Science at the Ateneo de Davao University with Batch 2020 as the recipient of the Jesuit Mission Award, got his license last March 2022 Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers, and is now on his thesis year to finish his MA on Anthropology. He also studied Environmental Issues and Natural Resource Management at East-West Center, Hawai’i through the YSEALI Academic Fellowship Spring 2019. He is also a Climate Reality Leader who received training last 2020, a former Country Director of ASEAN Abundance Innovation Lab (2020), and a former Vice President of the United States Alumni Association – Davao (2021).

As a young Mindanawon dreamer, he was awarded ‘the Everyday Dabawenyo Hero’ by the City Government of Davao last 2019. Beyond all these, his dream is simple: to mainstream inclusivity where our Indigenous Peoples (Bajaus), LGBTQIA+, Women, Children, People Deprived with Liberty (PDL), Youth, and other marginalized sectors are given a chance to access quality education, and lead and participate in environmental conservation efforts.

Jonnel Vasquez is currently working as Presidential Staff Officer I at the National Youth Commission. An advocate for the younger generations and the LGBTQIA+ community, he has been active in various social activities that promote youth engagement and a safe environment.

Focusing on youth development, Mr. Vasquez is one of the heads of Hagonoy Young Leaders Program (HYLEAP) since 2012. He also worked on a project for Scuola Maria School as the assistant project manager. This project provided scholarships to its beneficiaries.

He is also a member of LIGA MARIPOSA and a volunteer for BulSU Bahaghari, both of which organizations champion the rights of those belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community. In addition, he is also a member of the online community Pilipinas Chubs and Chasers that champion LGBT and HIV awareness, community camaraderie, and social responsibility.

 Lester R. Laborte is a young community and social development worker in Cebu. He’s a Project Development Officer II in one of the cluster areas for 4Ps or Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program in Cebu Province, and one of the Gender and Development or GAD Resource Pool in DSWD Region 7. He graduated with his Master’s degree in Social Work in 2019. Lester is also a Project Coordinator for the Center for Youth Participation and Development Initiatives (CYPD) and a volunteer at their barangay’s Sangguniang Kabataan, where they advocate for democracy and human rights, youth development and governance, social inclusion, emergency response, and mental health. He bikes a lot and explores places in his free time.

Beau Marie Tinio is a registered psychometrician. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of the Philippines-Cebu and is now pursuing a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of San Carlos.

 Her experience working in a clinical setting as a behavior interventionist for children with special needs and as a mental health professional providing mental health and psychosocial assistance to a variety of people solidified her commitment to promoting recovery, resiliency, and well-being.

She is also one of the key implementors of a youth well-being program in the province of Bohol, which uses evidence-based strategies such as advocacy and awareness campaigns in traditional and digital media, as well as mental health and psychosocial interventions, to improve well-being practices and reduce suicide-related incidents in the community. Also, she is a co-founder of a grassroots movement for mental health – Project Bohol; Mental Health Awareness.

Paulo Agir the founder of DGY Academy & Meraki Training, is a strength and conditioning coach, certified by the Australia Strength and Conditioning Association, and a student of the International Strength and Conditioning Institute an international association that promotes a sensible, evidence-based training methodology and thus acts as a bridge between the science and practice of sports training.

He is the founder and head coach of a sports & training business, Meraki Training & Sports Management: a company the leads and supports people in their pursuit of excellence in the area of fitness, athletic performance, and sports development. They recently finished their first-ever Meraki Beach Volleyball Open which 32 athletes joined and was supported by 6 companies. He is also the strength coach of creamline beach volleyball, Biogenic Beach Volleyball, and the Philippine beach volleyball team which bagged 2 gold medals, 1 silver medal, 2 bronze in Australia, and 2 bronze medals on the same team in the recent Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam. He has also spoken to countless companies and organizations some of which are, Canva Ph, San Miguel, DFNN  & in Philippine Insitute for Supply Management promoting HEALTH and WELL-BEING.

He believes that by using practical knowledge and science we can help people become stronger and healthier. Because when you’re strong and healthy you can do almost anything.

Dr. Angeli Conti Lopez has been an advocate for adolescents for over a decade, and believes that adolescents need to be recognized, heard, represented, and responded to. She is currently USAID’s ReachHealth Project’s  Adolescent Service Delivery Advisor and a practicing  Pediatrician and an Adolescent Medicine Specialist.

She had her undergrad and master’s degree at the University of the Philippines- Manila, College of Public Health, and graduated from the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. She completed her Pediatric and subspecialty training at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center.

Jeffry Lorenzo has 22 years of solid experience in development work in the Philippines. He has led, designed, launched, and managed various innovative interventions in the areas of adolescent health, prevention of teen pregnancy, children’s rights, parenting education, comprehensive sexuality education, and adolescent SRH needs in humanitarian settings. Through the years, he established his profession in providing technical guidance on ASRH programming to key national line agencies and a number of local governments in the country.

Currently, he is connected with the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs as one of the national technical advisors on Social Behavior Change (SBC) and Gender under the USAID ReachHealth project.

Quite an achiever, Dr. Eljohn Yee continues to pursue his passion for medical sciences. He graduated from Manila Science High School last 2008 as the Class Salutatorian. He pursued his undergraduate degree as a full tuition and fees scholar at the Ateneo de Manila University taking up a BS Health Sciences Minor in Health and Development where he graduated Summa cum laude in the Class of 2012.

He took up his medical education also as a scholar in the UP College of Medicine graduating Cum laude with his degree of Doctor of Medicine in the Class of 2017. Further, Dr. Yee took his Clinical Elective in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Oxford University Medical School–John Radcliffe Hospital in 2015. Currently, he is taking his 3rd year of residency training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Philippine General Hospital and taking a Masters of Hospital Administration at the UP College of Public Health

Patricia Mae Torres is a public servant, youth parliamentarian, and staunch advocate of good governance, mental health awareness, and youth empowerment. She has led and chaired many local and international academic and diplomatic conferences. Currently, she is the National Executive Vice President and a co-founder of Kabataang Lingkod Bayan ng Pilipinas, a national network of Young Public Servants in the Philippines.

She also holds an elected position as the SK Chairperson of Barangay Maybunga, Pasig City where she continues to empower the youth through rights-based and people-centered programs. Patricia also provides consultancy for international organizations such as agencies of the United Nations in the Philippines for community-based projects.

She graduated from the University of Asia and the Pacific with a degree in Master of Arts in Political Economy with a specialization in International Relations and Development.

TLS Speaker on Governance: EMMANUEL S. QUIZO

Emmanuel S. Quizo is a local public servant, civil society leader, and educator. He is currently a local legislative officer at the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Isabela City, Basilan. He previously served as private secretary for Isabela City Vice Mayor Jhul Kifli Salliman and as a local youth development officer in the same city.

For his contributions to improving local legislation, he was elected as one of the founding trustees of the National Society of Parliamentarians Inc., a national network of parliamentarians and policy advocates working for the enrichment and development of parliamentary practice, legislative research, and policy advocacy in the country.

Prior to his stint in public service, Quizo was a teacher at the Claret College of Isabela, where he served as the adviser of its senior high school student government. During his college years, he was an energetic youth advocate and student leader: having served as a founding member and chairperson of the Basilan Youth Congress, chairperson of the Ateneo de Zamboanga’s Council of Leaders, commissioner at the Ateneo de Zamboanga Electoral Commission, Department Secretary for Student Affairs and Development,

Presidential Management Secretary of Ateneo de Zamboanga’s El Consejo Atenista, and ambassador at the Philippine Model Congress, the country’s biggest legislative simulation program.

Quizo currently holds a Bachelor’s degree in accounting technology from the Ateneo de Zamboanga University and a Master’s degree in public administration from the Basilan State University.

TLS Speaker on Governance: HON. PRINCESS KIMBERLY V. UBAY-UBAY

Atty. Princess Kimberly V. Ubay-ubay is currently a Municipal Councilor of the Municipality of Alubijid, Misamis Oriental. At present, she is the youngest councilor in the Sangguniang Bayan, and the youngest lady councilor in the Municipality of Alubijid’s history. She ranked first in the Councilor race of the said municipality in the 2019 local election, and second in the recent 2022 local election.

She is the Chairman of the Committee on Laws and Rules, Committee on Good Governance, and Committee on Public Information in the Sangguniang Bayan of Alubijid. As a public servant, she advocates for women and children’s rights, youth empowerment, and good governance. This is evident in her legislative background where she has authored and passed forty-two (42) Municipal Ordinances since 2019.

Atty. Kim obtained her Juris Doctor degree in 2019 from Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan where she was a consistent Dean’s Lister. Alongside her role as a public servant, she is a private law practitioner who engages in the areas of Family Law, Criminal Law, and Property Law.

Prior to becoming a lawyer and a public official, she was an active student leader during her college and law school years. She served as the President of Xavier University Association of Law Students in AY 2018-2019, and the President of Xavier University Central Student Government in AY 2014-2015.

John Patrick Sebastian is currently working as Administrative and Finance Officer at Kazama Grameen Microfinance, Inc. He is also proud to be the Adviser of a student organization Mindoro Young Leaders Association (MYLA) and the Executive Director of Philippine Leadership Empowerment and Alliance for Development, Inc. (PHLEAD Inc.), both of which promote youth leadership and social engagement. In addition, Patrick is pursuing a master’s degree in Science Education at National Teachers College. 

 

On the side, hehave been active in KUMU as a content creator and the host of PATsiyensya Na Po – a Science quiz show. They were also awarded the Top 1 KUMU Campaign for the show Bawal Mastress Drilon and was nominated for the Best Comedy Host of the Year 2020 at KUMU.

Julius B. Malicdem is a peace educator who has delivered presentations organized by various government and non-government organizations in the Philippines and abroad. Most recently, he was one of the main presenters in the series of Regional Youth Forums jointly organized by the National Youth Commission and the International Association of Youth and Students for Peace – Pilipinas which was conducted last 2021 in all the 17 regions of the Philippines. He is also an event organizer of several International Peace Conferences like the Asian Summit 2015 held in Manila and the 2019 Asia Pacific Summit in Phnom Penh Cambodia. Dr. Malicdem is presently the Director of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) in Southeast Asia and the Chairman of UPF – Philippines.

Universal Peace Federation is an international non-government organization that holds a General Consultative Status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN-ECOSOC). Concurrently, DR. JULIUS MALICDEM also holds the position as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the International Peace Leadership College (IPLC) and a Member of the Board of Trustees of Sun Hwa International Academy in Antipolo City. He is also the Immediate Past Chairman of the Professors World Peace Academy – Philippines and the International Association of Youth and Students for Peace – Pilipinas (IAYSP).

DR. MALICDEM is a Licensed Electronics and Communication Engineer and completed his Degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering at the Virgen Milagrosa University in Pangasinan and graduated Cum Laude. He also obtained his Master in Business Administration (MBA) in 1998 and earned his Doctor of Divinity in 2016. Dr. Malicdem had some successful stint with Toastmasters International when he became the Champion in the Philippines National Impromptu Speech Competition in 2004. DR. MALICDEM was born on July 17, 1969 (52 years old) in the province of Pangasinan and currently resides in Quezon City, Metro Manila. He is happily married to Ms. Ayako Katayama from Japan and blessed with a 12-year-old daughter.

Bryan Ezra Cainglet Gonzales is a legislative lobbyist, human rights worker, and good governance advocate.

Gonzales is the founding president and chief operations officer of the National Society of Parliamentarians, Inc. He is concurrently a consultant at the House of Representatives. He was the executive director of the Human Rights and People Empowerment Center, Inc., policy advocacy officer at the Families of Victims of Involuntary Disappearance, Inc., coordinator of the Mambabatas Para sa Karapatang Pantao (Legislators for Human Rights) coalition, and a consultant at the Senate of the Philippines.

He has worked with international organizations, national agencies, civil society groups, and local government units on various policy advocacy initiatives related to human rights, social inclusion, participatory governance, peacebuilding, public health, and youth development. His portfolio includes implemented, co-implemented, and ongoing programs and projects funded by the European Union, International Organization for Migration, Civicus World Alliance for Civic Participation, Voice Global, United States Department of State, and Foundation for the Philippine Environment.

As a youth leader, Gonzales helped found several national youth organizations in the Philippines, such as the award-winning good governance network GoodGov PH, human rights coalition Kabataang Tagapagtanggol ng Karapatan (Young Human Rights Defenders), and public servants network Kabataang Lingkod Bayan (Young Public Servants). Previously, he was affiliated with the National Youth Parliament, the country’s only youth parliament created by law, and represented the same in the Regional Youth Advisory Council of the National Capital Region for two years. He has represented the Philippines in several international engagements, such as the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS), Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellowship in Civic Engagement at the Arizona State University, and the Democracy Summit Youth Town Hall organized by US President Joseph Biden.

For his efforts as a young human rights defender, he was recognized by the Free Leila de Lima Movement as one of 60 exemplary Filipino individuals in the field of human rights work and a finalist for Outstanding Young Human Rights Defender in Amnesty International Philippines’ Ignite Awards.

Gonzales graduated with a degree in Journalism from the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he was recognized as the Most Outstanding Student for Leadership by his home college. He is currently taking his Master of Public Administration degree at the same university. He is also a member of both the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Gamma Mu International Honor Society in Social Sciences.

Panelist 1: Peter G. Sing | Palawan Savers Club

A PR practitioner and entrepreneur, Peter Sing first came to Palawan in 2007 and has
since fallen in love with the island. Inspired by the warmth of the community and drawing
from his personal experiences, Peter envisions a better Philippines by empowering the
people one Filipino at a time. Using his personal resources, he goes around the country
to share his advocacy of personal fiscal responsibility by conducting seminars to
different groups of Filipinos. He believes firmly that social responsibility and inclusive
growth are fundamental steps to elevating not just individual lives, but the quality of life
of an entire nation.

Panelist 2: Salve I. Duplito | ABS-CBN News Channel

Salve Duplito is the founder and the president of Empower and Transform, a young company composed of a dynamic team that has the expertise and experience in using the covid-induced massive movement of activities –- from education and entertainment to work and business –- for the advancement of financial education for Filipinos here and overseas.

Salve is also the resident Financial Adviser of On The Money, a personal finance show aired on the ABS-CBN News Channel, where she has a regular segment called “Salve Says.” She is also the Managing Producer and Head Writer of the said show. Salve shares personal finance tips and strategies and widens the discussion on financial consumer and investing issues that face viewers today. The show has won the Gawad Tanglaw Awards for Business Show Category thrice and the Dangal ng Bayan Awards twice.

As a financial literacy advocate, Salve has pushed for more than two decades for a cultural revolution on how people should handle their finances and use debt wisely. She is the media’s most prominent scam buster, setting aside concerns for personal safety to take on individuals that are defrauding the public. She is fearless even when going against big business, for the sake of the average consumer. Aside from writing for On The Money and her segments, she takes time to provide one-on-one mentoring to couples and individuals who would like to manage their personal finances better.

 

Before joining the media, Salve worked as a communications consultant and writer for organizations like the World Bank, the USAID, and the Asian Development Bank. She also worked for two decades as a financial journalist for publications like the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the Inquirer Interactive, and the BusinessWorld, winning prestigious awards for her articles like the Jaime V. Ongpin Awards for Investigative Journalism, EJAP/Metropacific Banking and Finance Reporter of the Year, and the Citibank Award for Excellence, among others.

Lito Villanueva is the Executive Vice President, Chief Innovation and Inclusion Officer of RCBC. Concurrently, Mr. Villanueva is the Chief Digital Transformation Advisor for the Yuchengco Group of Companies, one of the oldest conglomerates in Asia. He is also the founding chairman of Fintech Alliance.ph, the Philippines’ largest organization of digitally-enabled companies that generates over 90% of FinTech-initiated transactions volume in the country today.

Mr. Villanueva is the Philippines’ leading and award-winning thought leader on digital transformation and inclusive digital finance. He has over 20 years of experience in banking, telecommunications, payments, development finance, advisory, regtech, and financial technology. In the span of his career, he has covered over 30 markets in Asia, Europe, Middle East, and Africa with his various roles in the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Land Bank of the Philippines, PLDT-Smart Communications, Voyager Innovations, PayMaya, International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group, and Visa. He changed the game by helping enable regulations in collaboration with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). These regulations promoted interoperability through the national retail payments system and made digital finance more inclusive through the adoption of a national strategy for financial inclusion and introduction of basic deposit accounts. As a digital inclusion and transformation advocate, he institutionalized the country’s first code of conduct and code of ethics, providing a wider industry framework towards greater consumer protection in partnership with all regulators.

He has merited over 70 global and regional awards for championing innovations on financial inclusion and scaling digital initiatives for the unbanked and underserved. These accolades include being named one of the Top 100 FinTech Leaders in Asia, Mr. Fintech of the Philippines by BizNewsAsia, as Chief Innovation of the Year by the London-based The Banker, and among the Top 100 Filipinos on LinkedIn in 2021.

He released various publications includingTthe Uncharted Beyond: The Taxonomy of FinTech in the Philippines and the award-winning three volumes of the Inclusive Digital Finance Report. He is also a member of the Inclusion Executive Committee of the Global Impact FinTech (GIFT) Forum, Singapore-based AIBP Advisory Board, Chairman of the South Africa-based Alliance of Digital Finance Associations, and the Management Association of the Philippines. He is also the founding president of the BSP Governor Nestor A. Espenilla Jr. Institute for Growth towards National Inclusion, Transformation, and Empowerment (IGNITE).

He finished the Cambridge Intellect Leadership Programme in 2019 on Digital Transformation by Design at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School Executive Education in UK. Earned two graduate degrees: Master of Arts in public administration with magna cum laude honors from the University of Santo Tomas (UST), and Master in National Security Administration from the National Defense College of the Philippines as a state scholar, and its youngest graduate, thus far. His undergraduate degree is in political science also in UST. He was also the first two-term elected president of the UST AB Student Council during his college years.
